ABOUT FUNCTIONAL NUTRITION

"Let food be thy medicine, and medicine be thy food."

Functional Nutrition derives from the principles of Functional Medicine, which aims to uncover the root causes of chronic conditions through a comprehensive and extensive assessment of the body as a whole.

Rather than following the more conventional tendencies to focus on the treatment of diseases through symptom management, functional medicine aims for the cure and prevention of disease. It is not, however, a substitute for conventional treatment. It is meant to provide a complementary and integrative lens.

In terms of nutrition, functional practitioners work to identify underlying nutrition imbalances and potential disease patterns to develop personalized interventions catered to your unique biology. Functional nutrition is preventive, proactive, personalized, and must be evidence-based. The goal is to pave the right path to maximize the potential for health and reverse dysfunction or disease through the power of food.

Food is more than calories; food is information, communicating with the entire body through messages promoting wellness or illness. Today's conventional diets are replete with calories but depleted in nutrients, creating an environment of imbalance and disease. Nutritional imbalances exacerbate uniquely depending on our biology. For example, while some may experience frequent headaches, others may complain of bloating or joint pain. Whatever the symptom, the root cause can likely be improved, and oftentimes, reversed, with proper nutrition.

In order to discover the root cause of symptoms, practitioners must spend time with their clients and thoroughly assess them. The functional nutritionist's job is to discover nutritional links and guide you towards establishing the habits that will restore balance and wellness through food and other lifestyle adaptations.

The best part? You get to be an active player in your own health!
